This week I finished up a project for Neways, an interesting project in that it mixes footage shot by someone else on location in China, footage I shot myself (see image below) and stock footage bought from several sources with some slight animation.

The video turned out good, telling in a clear and concise way what Neways does in China, and it gives a good impression of their factories there. Each shot had to be colour corrected and many shots needed other corrections, in part due to the different sources and in part because whoever shot the footage in China apparently had their camera set to ‘auto’ which caused all kind of shifts in light and colour when they moved the camera, which they did a lot…

I recently shot a music video for a bachelorette party. I can’t upload the video because (1) it contains copyrighted music (the Extra Festive version of Mariah Carey’s ‘All I Want for Christmas Is You’) and I don’t really need any lawsuits right now, and (2) I heard that song like 70 times the last two weeks, something I wish upon no one. So we’ll have to make do with stills.

Shot with pretty much available light and the Sony EX1 and Nikon D7000, edited in Premiere (you can’t see that right now but take my word), mostly graded in After Effects with Magic Bullet Colorista II and there’s a couple of Video Copilot’s Optical Flares here and there as well.

Experimenting with the HyperDeck Shuttle

So, I shot a simple scene this evening: a sparkler, my Sony PMW-EX1 (overcranked to 60fps), and the Shuttle.

The differences are pretty pronounced, there’s slightly more detail, less noise and less compression artifacts in the uncompressed footage. It’s also pretty huge, see previous post.

I think the footage looks nice and the Shuttle is nice to have, but for many shots it’s probably pure overkill., e.g. interviews or simple registrations. It might be nice for (reflective) water, shots with lots of motion and scenes with little available light.

These examples might be more obvious if the lightbox plugin wouldn’t dip to black, but there you go.

Like, for instance, a Blackmagic Design HyperDeck Shuttle. After waiting for it to become available and then waiting a little bit more for the (custom made) cables to arrive, I’m finally ready to go out & see what’s what.

Initial findings: firstly, uncompressed HD video is, unsurprisingly, insanely large (34:16 seconds @ 1920*1080*25fps = 4.868.530.254 bytes) and secondly, 4.868.530.254 bytes via USB 2 = no fun. Premiere Pro CS5.5 however seems to have little trouble handling (a few of) these files.

Spot the differences! I know it’s only an incremental update but you might have made some effort, Adobe.
Anyway, in my opinion the new Warp Stabilizer alone is worth the price. That, and the Mercury Playback Engine is supposed to be improved.
